 South Korea Cho Cheol-hyeon, recognized internationally as an artist, educator of Korea's Intangible Cultural Heritage, and an accomplished essayist, has left an indelible mark on the global stage of culture and arts. His career is not only a dedicated pursuit of traditional Korean music but also a profound dialogue on cultural heritage and innovation.

Since 1971, Cho has served as an educational mentor for Daegeum Sanjo, a traditional Korean music form listed as the country's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Cho's journey in the arts started in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, where he grew up in poverty. However, his resilience and passion for the arts helped him overcome many hardships, ultimately transitioning from a background in engineering to immerse himself in the traditional music field.

After leaving his engineering career in the Changwon Industrial Complex, Cho decided to devote himself entirely to the study and dissemination of traditional Korean music. In addition to performing hundreds of shows both domestically and internationally, he founded the Cho Cheol-hyeon Daegeum Institute and served as a judge at various traditional music festivals and competitions, significantly advancing the popularity and development of this art form.

 

Notably, Cho is also a talented essayist. Since 2008, he has published several collections of essays reflecting his philosophical thoughts and observations of life, including "Daegeum, Finally Becoming a Flute without Holes" and his latest work, "Numbers and Gradual Enlightenment."

One of Cho's most remarkable innovations is the "Palm Daegeum," a new type of Korean musical instrument he developed to make learning music more accessible, allowing the joy of music to be shared more widely. This invention has not only transformed music education in Korea but has also gained international acclaim.
